Dear Katy, Donald Trump just interfered with the Russia investigation again. After firing Jeff Sessions, Trump installed his stooge Matthew Whitaker to oversee Robert Mueller's investigation. This is a direct assault on the independence of the investigation, which has produced dozens of indictments, guilty pleas and guilty verdicts. Trump has been threatening to provoke just this kind of constitutional crisis and we can't let him get away with it – we must show up today to say he is not above the law. CREDO is joining our allies in calling for events around the country today, Nov. 8, at 5:00 p.m. local time. Are you able to attend a rally near you? Click here to find an event near you and RSVP. Please note that some hosts may have changed the date and time of your local event. Mueller is tasked with getting to the bottom of Russian interference in the 2016 election – including potential Trump collusion, but now Whitaker could completely sabotage his work. Whitaker has complained that Mueller's investigation might hurt Trump and his family's reputations, defended the Trump Tower meeting with Russians, derided Mueller's investigation as a "witch hunt," proposed slashing Mueller's budget in order to sabotage the investigation, suggested that Deputy Attorney General Rod Rosenstein should interfere with the scope of the investigation, retweeted an op-ed on the "Mueller Lynch Mob," suggested hiding the Mueller evidence from the public, complained about aggressive tactics, opposed legislation to protect the special counsel from White House interference and chaired the 2014 political campaign of Sam Clovis, a grand jury witness in the investigation.1,2 Mueller's investigation has produced indictments or guilty pleas from 32 people, including four former Trump advisers.3 Earlier this week, reports emerged that White House officials were concerned that Mueller was on the verge of indicting Donald Trump Jr. That's why Trump wants his stooge to step-in. This is a huge reckoning for our democracy. Congress has the authority and responsibility to hold Trump accountable. Trump is counting on post-election fatigue to normalize this outright attack on the rule of law. That is exactly why we need to show up to tell our lawmakers that we will not sit by as Trump and his lapdogs quietly slide the United States into authoritarianism.
