| Dear Katy, Hearings for Donald Trump's Supreme Court nominee Brett Kavanaugh start today.1 The Senate should not hand over the Supreme Court to a criminal co-conspirator who may have helped a foreign government steal the 2016 election and whose dangerous agenda includes ripping children from their families, taking away women's rights, banning Muslims from the country, undermining LGBTQ equality and destroying the planet. It is crucial that we send that message loud and clear during Kavanaugh's hearings this week. Tell the Senate: Don't let Trump institutionalize his bigotry and corruption in America's highest court. Kavanaugh's nomination confirmed Trump's commitment to stack the court with another right-wing extremist who will greenlight Republican attacks on women, immigrants, Muslims, LGBTQ people, people of color, workers, the environment and our democracy as whole. The nomination also made clear that Trump wants a get-out-of-jail-free card. Kavanaugh believes the president should have increased power to block criminal and civil actions against him.2 The Supreme Court may soon have to answer key questions arising from the Mueller investigation, including whether a sitting president can be subpoenaed or indicted or pardon himself. How the Supreme Court rules could potentially make Trump immune to consequences for colluding with Russia to undermine our electoral system and democracy.3 They hearings are happening now because Mitch McConnell is trying to jam through Kavanaugh's confirmation before November. That's not just because he wants to influence the midterms. It's also because Republicans want to confirm Kavanaugh before more damaging information about his record can come out. Republicans are doing everything they can to slow down and block the release of documents from Kavanaugh's five years as staff secretary in the George W. Bush White House because they know that those documents could give even more insight into Kavanaugh's extreme views on executive power, the role he played in authorizing torture and civil liberties abuses after September 11, and his participation in efforts to undermine women's rights, LGBTQ equality and the assault weapons ban. They may even prove that Kavanaugh lied under oath about his involvement in deciding Bush's torture policy during his confirmation hearing for the U.S. Court of Appeals for the District of Columbia Circuit in 2006.4 Senate Republicans need to get the message loud and clear that their partisan refusal to provide the necessary checks to Trump's corruption and extremism is unacceptable. Wobbly Democrats need to hear that we expect nothing less than all out defense of the Supreme Court, our communities and our democracy.
