I'm safe now

Dear Kathleen, I've lived in Florida for 26 years. In that time, I've never evacuated for a storm. But after witnessing Harvey ravage Texas, I knew that this time was different. I'm safe now. I evacuated from St. Petersburg to Orlando. However, at least 4 of my fellow Floridians have been killed — adding to at least 27 killed in the Caribbean. And millions more just like me have been forced to evacuate their homes. We don't yet know the full cost of Hurricane Irma, but we need to act quickly to help communities most impacted. Send a message to your senators and congressperson to demand hurricane recovery funds that empower the communities most in need, prepare us for more storms worsened by climate change and put us on a path to 100% renewable energy. To really support vulnerable coastal communities we must also hold our leaders accountable on climate action. Rising seas lead to larger storm surges. Warmer ocean adds energy and moisture to the storms. Congress must address climate change to protect all our communities. They can start with the funds they allocate for rebuilding Florida and Texas. We have to act fast. We can't let powerful climate deniers — and their fossil fuel industry backers — like Florida's Governor Rick Scott and Senator Marco Rubio guide the nation's response to Hurricanes Harvey and Irma. Scott already left us less prepared for Irma by banning the Florida Department of Environmental Protection from using the words 'climate change!' But Hurricanes Harvey and Irma change everything. The nation is talking about climate change right now. Politicians who avoid a stance on climate have the space to speak out. This is the moment to push hard to make Democrats and moderate Republicans act to protect our communities and climate. While we take on the urgent relief work here and begin to rebuild, Florida needs you to take action. Send a message to your senators and congressperson right now.
