Tar sands pipelines could spell disaster

Greenpeace

Tar sands could devastate our climate, communities, and wildlife.

Take Action

Stop the tar sands pipeline expansion!

Take action

We are on the brink of ecological disaster. If we don't keep taking big, bold action to stop the massive threats posed by tar sands, it will put us in jeopardy of not being able to have a stable, green, and peaceful future. Please sign our petition calling on JPMorgan Chase to stop bankrolling pipeline projects. Already, 72,000+ people have signed this petition, but we haven't gotten your signature yet. Cutting off funding for tar sands pipelines is one of the most effective ways of stopping them.

Oil spills anywhere endanger human health and the environment. And tar sands is not like regular crude oil. Diluted bitumen from tar sands poses a particular threat to water resources. A diluted bitumen spill in water is more difficult to clean up than a conventional oil spill, because bitumen sinks in water.1 It threatens species living within the ocean, rivers, and lakes, including animals who feed on them, like salmon and orcas.2

And because bitumen is heavily processed before it's extracted and transported to refineries, it releases around 20 percent more greenhouse gas pollution than ordinary crude oil.3 That's why former NASA scientist, Prof. James Hansen, once said that burning all of Canada's tar sands, while continuing to burn conventional fossil fuels, would be "game over"4 for the climate and life as we know it.

It's time for each of us to step up and peacefully demand the healthy future we deserve. Sign our petition demanding that JPMorgan Chase defund tar sands pipelines — to protect our communities, climate, water, and wildlife. So far, three major banks have pulled their funding of pipeline projects — proof that the resistance is essential and working! For example, ING announced it will not finance tar sands oil pipeline projects — including Keystone XL — after it received a letter sent by 20 Indigenous and environmental groups asking the bank to refrain from funding Kinder Morgan's Trans Mountain pipeline. And across the country, Greenpeace supporters are protesting and demanding that other financial institutions stop bankrolling pipeline projects. Momentum is on our side. Let's shut down pipeline expansion for good.

Thank you,

P.S.  From the rights of Indigenous people to the lands of farmers and ranchers — from our water supply to our wildlife — tar sands pipelines could spell disaster. Please stop the fossil fuel industry from potentially violating human rights, destroying livelihoods, and polluting wildlife habitat. Sign our petition to JPMorgan Chase to demand they stop funding pipeline projects!
