Dear Katy, We just got a key win in our fight to stop Trumpcare. Yesterday, after facing weeks of intense pressure from grassroots activists – including hundreds of thousands of CREDO members and our friends in the progressive movement – Mitch McConnell caved. He postponed the vote on the bill until after the Senate's July 4 recess. McConnell abandoned his promised vote because he did not have enough Republican support to pass his cruel, dangerous and deadly bill. And he did not have enough support because of CREDO members like you. Together, we made over 48,000 calls to key senators demanding that they stand up for health care and say no to Trumpcare. Our activism worked, and the momentum in the fight over health care is on our side, but we cannot afford to stop now. McConnell will be tenacious in trying to cut craven and cynical backroom deals with the members of his caucus over the recess to find a way to steal health care from 22 million people. There is no deal that could remake this horrible bill into one that will serve the people of Colorado. Sen. Gardner should hear loud and clear that his constituents expect him to reject any version of Trumpcare that McConnell puts forward for a vote. Tell Sen. Gardner: Stop Trumpcare. Click here for a script and the number to call. Senate Republican leaders can only afford to lose two Republican votes. They know that the greater the public outrage, the harder it will be to hold their caucus together. Now is the time to keep reminding key Republican senators who they work for. If we can get Sen. Gardner and at least two of his colleagues to do their jobs and protect the health and well-being of their constituents, we can a maintain our firewall against a Trumpcare bill that would: - Destroy Medicare by stealing from its trust to fund huge tax breaks for the wealthy, paving the way to its privatization.2
- Cut millions of Medicaid dollars, phase out the program's expansion and allow states to impose work requirements on Medicaid recipients, an attack that could force millions of low-income people to go without necessary care.3
- Defund Planned Parenthood, which would threaten the reproductive freedom of the 2.5 million people who rely on Planned Parenthood for health care every year.4
- Prohibit people from using credits or other Trumpcare funds to purchase insurance plans that cover abortion.5
- Give states the power to remove emergency room visits, mental health care and maternity care from the list of essential benefits that insurance providers are required to cover.6
- Increase health care premiums for seniors by as much as 850 percent.7
We are deeply grateful and appreciative of the power of the resistance which has been fueled by CREDO members and our progressive allies and we know that Sen. Gardner is feeling the pressure. But we cannot get complacent and underestimate congressional Republicans' commitment to their party's extremist agenda. Just months ago, Speaker of the House Paul Ryan faced a similar situation to McConnell's. He pulled the House vote on Trumpcare not only because of massive progressive pushback, but because conservative extremists did not think the bill was cruel enough. Ryan worked to strong-arm moderates into agreeing to an even more extreme version of the bill and jammed it through the House. There's no reason to assume that McConnell won't try the same tactics in the Senate. We have to keep massive public pressure on Sen. Gardner to say no to Trumpcare once and for all. Tell Sen. Gardner: Stop Trumpcare.
